Greenland is the world’s largest island. As per 1st of January 2008 there are 56.462 inhabitants, were of ¼ living in Nuuk, the capitol, where SG has its office and seat.
Nuuk, a mini-metropolis comparable with Copenhagen, London and even New York but in a smaller scale with every thing what a real big-city should have. Tall buildings and apartment-buildings, Seats of Parliament and Government, Movie Theater, public swimming stadium, an array of cafés and different stores, hospital and an airport and not to mention rush-hours in the morning and evening.
But it always wasn’t like that. Nuuk, meaning The Peninsula, was formally found by the Norwegian missionary Hans Egede in 1728 and thereby Greenland’s oldest town. But seven years earlier in 1721 Hans Egede first arrived to Greenland, namely to Island of Hope 20 kilometers from Nuuk.
As per 1st of January there are 15.421 inhabitants in Nuuk with just about 120 kilometers of paved road. 25% of the inhabitants do not come from Nuuk or Greenland and today Nuuk is the fastest growing capitol in the world. The Municipality of Nuuk is larger than 105.000 square kilometers and has two settlements under it, namely Qerqertarsuatsiaat and Kapisillit with approximately 400 inhabitants.
Come April 2008 the Municipality of Nuuk will under a municipal reform that have an effect upon the national structure of the individual municipals of Greenland. Today Greenland is divided into 18 municipalities.
By an over all scale Nuuk is divided into three areas.
There is down-town Nuuk which is the oldest part where most of the businesses have their office or seat. It is also here that there is a majority of public apartment buildings and houses. The area of Nuuk is considered down-town or town-centre.
In Nuussuaq which was established in the late 1970’s live approximately 5 to 6.000 inhabitants. This part is considered as a suburb to Nuuk. The area mostly consists of private and public housing.
At the beginning of the new millennium an area was opened for housing. This area is called Qinngorput and we only have to go back 20 years were this area was considered as FAR away in the middle of no where, where you would go hunting or camping. Today it is the absolute fastest growing part of Nuuk. Nearly 100% of the housing here is private.
