In 1992 the Greenland Cabinet asked Statistics Greenland to conduct a nation-wide survey on the living conditions of the population. As a result of this, Statistics Greenland made a questionnaire survey in the spring of 1994 which included 1500 randomly picked individuals over 18. The respondents were asked to answer 147 questions regarding housing and employment, economy, consumption, leisure activities, education, family relations and professional occupation in Greenland. Besides this, 2 distinct surveys were made for Ammassalik and Upernavik Municipalities in order to ensure special thorough knowledge regarding living conditions in remote areas. Students in Denmark or abroad are not included in these surveys throughout time.

The surveys can be characterized as a series of traditional surveys, which through a series of objective indicators reveal facts about the material conditions of the population especially. The choice of such a design was made especially since it was the first time a survey on living conditions in Greenland were to be conducted back in 1994, wherefore there was a need to reveal a long list of questions of a material nature. As an added bonus, the material focus resulted in the fact that the questionnaires were relatively simple to answer and adapt.
