COMMUNICATION

The information society can be illustrated partly by suppliers in terms of IT professionals and their employment, partly by the demand in terms of the use of IT such as the Internet by businesses, by the public sector, and by families.

The IT industry is comprised of companies offering products and services in electronics, IT, software, telecommunications, and other areas, primarily based on information technology.

The IT trade can be divided into the branches of IT industry, computer wholesaling, telecommunications, and IT consultancy, including six individual branches of trade.

The industry employs approximately 800 full-time employees. About 75 per cent are employed in telecommunications whereas approximately 18 per cent work in IT consulting services.

A 2004 study of corporate use of IT showed that 69 per cent of all businesses had Internet access. Approximately every fifth company had a website in 2004. Three out of 10 enterprises had a broadband Internet connection (i.e. ADSL or other wired connection).

With regard to electronic commerce, five out of ten companies placed orders via the Internet while one in ten had received orders, cf. Overview 1.
