Introduction of modern contraceptive methods and legalization of provoked abortions led to a steep decline in fertility in the early 1970s.
Total fertility was fairly stable around 2.5 children per woman until 2010, followed by 10 years of stable fertility around 2.1 children per woman.
From 2021, fertility has dropped to 1.8.
