Climate

The climate in Greenland is predominantly arctic. This means that the mean temperature in the warmest month does not exceed 10 °C.


The large extent of the country means that there are considerable climatic variations from the north to the south. There are also substantial climatic variations between the coasts near open water and areas inland.

 

The relatively mild West Greenland Current determines the extent of open water areas along the west coast while the cold East Greenland Current carries ice floes along the east coast, limiting the open water period.

 

Because of these currents East Greenland has a high arctic climate with temperatures at or below 5 °C while the west coast up to north of Upernavik is defined as having a low arctic climate with temperatures between 5 and 10 °C.

Degree Days
Overview 4 shows the summed degree day values for selected weather stations in Greenland. A degree day is the (positive) difference between a constant indoor temperature (in Greenland, 19 °C) and the average outdoor temperature as measured over 24 hours. Degree days can then be accumulated over a period of time, e.g. one calendar month. Degree days indicate the likely consumption of energy for the heating of houses based on climatic data.
